So, I know this restaurant post should be about some delicious creamy pasta dish from a little restaurant hidden down a cobbled roman street, but having been living in Rome for the last 8 months I have definitely had my fill of freshly hand made pasta so I went in search for something a little different… and found it!
I have only been to Ecru once, but it has gone straight to the top of my list of restaurants to visit again.
Ecru is a fully raw, vegan, dairy free and gluten free restaurant. It's in the heart of the centre and only a 5/10 minute walk from St Peters Basilica, but with that being said its tucked away nicely on the side street of Via Acciaioli which allows you to sit out front, enjoy your lunch and bask in the italian sunshine.

I went there for breakfast, which they serve all day. The menu is quite different as there is no dairy or gluten in their products. I went for their version of fresh fruit, granola and yogurt. The fruit was perfectly ripe orange segments, chopped up pears, kiwis and freeze dried raspberries. The granola was made from different nuts and seeds sweetened with cinnamon and the strangest part was their version of yogurt which they call 'vegetable mouse'. It is made from nut milk thickened with cashews, it was deliciously creamy and filling, and went perfectly with the crispy but chewy nutty granola and sweet fruit.
The menu is quite small but very well thought out. They have everything from raw veggie sushi rolls, big fresh garden salads with micro greens, amazing dips with delicious nutty crackers, noodles made from an assortment of vegetables with different 'pasta sauces' to mix and match and hearty soups accompanied with crunchy breads and crackers. If you're not in the mood to sit in and have a healthy meal, the entire menu is available to take away!
The restaurant is small, minimalistic with an industrial feel, there are only a few seats so if you are planning on going during the weekend I'd advise to get their quite early. They display all of the fresh ingredients behind a big pane of glass, which acts as a type of deli. All of the extra toppings and crackers are stored in shining glass jars, that add to the simple and clean design of the restaurant.
The restaurant is owned by two women who put their hearts and souls into making it as great as it can be and it really does show.
If you're interested in healthy raw food this is a must - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
