DON NINO
The first place I always call to when my cravings for smooth, creamy ice-cream need fixing is Don Nino. Not only does this gelateria produce THE BEST ice-cream from seasonal ingredients but it is also the most beautifully decorated one in Rome. The off white interior creates an elegant yet comfortable setting, this, coupled with extreme attention to detail in the way the walls are shelves are dressed is the reason it is at the top of my list.
Minimalistic white shelves are perfectly filled with glistening glass jars full of chocolate drops, nuts and crispy toppings, delicate pastel accessories and vibrant green plants. Mouthwatering Sicilian cannoli are piled high in little woven baskets waiting to be filled with delicious pistachio and vanilla cream and the homemade ice-cream sits in silver barrels behind the gleaming glass deli.
One important thing to know in Rome when looking for decent ice-cream is don't be fooled by the hundreds of gelaterias that are lit up with vibrant lights, have mountains of colorful ice-cream topped with wafer cones and fresh fruit and seem to be exactly what you are looking for. I have learnt that it is the little gelatorias that have their ice-cream displayed in big metal barrels with lids on is where you want to go. These are the places that make their homemade soft creamy ice-cream from fresh seasonal products on a daily basis and will most definitely have queues of Italians snaking around them.
You can find this beautiful gelateria in four locations around Rome. I stumbled across this one with a friend near the Trevi Fountain, its charming entrance drew us right in.
